Castel Gandolfo is a village perched on a volcanic crater rim above the volcanic lake of Albano. It is situated in the area of Castelli Romani which is a bigger region with several small towns that are worth visiting. I have a post about the best cities to visit in this area, read more here. The town got its name from the Gandolfo family, who back in the 12th century owned the land and built a castle overlooking the lake. Situated about 20 kilometers southeast of Rome makes it a perfect day trip destination. Here are five things to do in Castel Gandolfo.
Best 5 things to do in Castel Gandolfo
1. Visit the Papal Palace and its gardens
The Papal Palace was built in the 17th century upon orders from Pope Urban VIII, who wanted a summer residence to escape the heat in Rome. It has since then been the summer residence for most Popes, except for a short time of period between 1870 and 1929. This massive building and associated gardens of 55 hectares dominate the town of Castel Gandolfo and are the biggest tourist attraction in town. Be aware that you have to wear modest clothing no matter the season, so avoid shorts and tank tops.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm

2. Explore the views from the lake
Castel Gandolfo is perched on the crater rim of an old volcanic crater that now has turned into a volcanic lake, which makes the setting of this town truly incredible. Follow the road down to the lake and hire a boat, pedal boat, or kayak and enjoy the views from the lake. You can also rent a bike or go hiking along the many trails surrounding the lake.
3. Explore the town center
To be honest, the town of Castel Gandolfo is small but it’s very quaint and cozy. Spend some time wandering the streets of the town center and people watch at the square of Piazza della Libertà. You can find some small souvenir shops there selling local produce and the cafés and restaurants offer an eye-catching view.
4. Try local wine
The area of Castelli Romani, where Castel Gandolfo is situated, is famous for its good wines. Actually, Frascati is the town that is famous for its wine called Frascati DOC. It is situated about a 15 minutes drive from Castel Gandolfo. You can visit a local vineyard and tour the grounds but you can also stop by the small wine bar called Art e Vino in Castel Gandolfo where you can sample the famous wine and try some local dishes.
5. Eat local food
Talking about local food, the town of Castelli Romani has some exquisite restaurants overlooking the lake where you can try all of the famous dishes from the region. The most recommended restaurant by locals is Pignanelli which has been run by the Pagnanelli family since 1882. Pignanelli is high class so if you’re looking for something more casual you can book a table at Lo Spuntino or Ristorante Bucci, which both have good food and nice views.

How to get to Castel Gandolfo?
By public transport
Castelli Romani is situated about 20 kilometers southeast of Rome. You can take the Line A metro out to the end station Anagnina and from there get a Cotral bus. There is also a small railway line that services Castel Gandolfo, it is however not frequent so check the timetable in advance so you don’t have to sit around or accidentally get stranded somewhere. You can buy the tickets at the Termini station in Rome. Both of these options will take around 1 hour.
By car
Visiting Castel Gandolfo by car gives you more flexibility and is what I recommend you to do. You can then go whenever it fits you and you can also stop by places on the way there. Gaeta’s city center is quite small but the many beaches are scattered around a bigger area and those will be hard to get to without your own car. The drive will take about 2 hours and 10 minutes and there are several car parks near the city. Just search parking Gaeta on google and you will get a lot of suggestions.
