Are you planning to visit Rome in the near future and want to know the best areas to stay in? As Rome has an endless number of hotels and other accommodations I know it is hard to navigate. But you have come to the right place! As I have just visited Rome and stayed in a few different areas, I have compiled some information for you. Read on to find out where to stay in Rome for a weekend.

Where to stay in Rome, Italy: Neighborhood Guide

Did you know that Rome has 22 districts? I didn’t and it’s not like all of these are worth staying in. Instead, we are gonna focus on the most central neighborhoods as those are the best ones to stay in when visiting Rome for a shorter amount of time. The neighborhoods I will mention are:

  • Centro Storico
  • Tridente
  • Trastevere
  • Monti

Centro Storico

This area is right in the heart of the historic center and is therefore the perfect starting point for exploring the city. If you are staying in this area, you will never have to walk more than 25 minutes in each direction to get to the most famous sights. The excellent location and proximity to everything help you save some money, but mostly time and headache as you won’t have to navigate public transport. The prices to stay here are, however, among the most expensive in the city so you will have to decide what is most important to you – location or cost. The ambiance of this area is however something else and staying there will be an experience that will make you fall more in love with Rome. I would say it is worth it if you can afford it.

Best places to stay in Centro Storico

Budget:

Mater Rooms&Suites – This neighborhood has the best location, as most famous sights are just 5-10 minutes walk away. The apartments are very modern and fresh and there is not much more to ask for with that location and that price.

It’s very hard to find budget accommodation in this area. The one above can barely be called budget according to me but I made an exception this time. If you’re looking for budget accommodation in Rome, it’s better to seek in other neighborhoods.

Midrange:

B&B Palazzo Fracassini – With a bright and welcoming feeling this B&B is a great place to stay in Rome. It’s close to most of the main attractions in Rome and there are also markets and more local restaurants nearby. The beds are also super comfy!

Relais Teatro Argentina – This little B&B is super nice and has views over the old ruins! This is another place with a great location and the owner is so friendly. It kinda feels like coming home when you are away and that’s always a good sign.

Tridente

The area called Tridente, located around the Spanish steps is definitely a more luxurious neighborhood than any other and is regarded as the most beautiful part of Rome. With its neoclassical buildings, designer stores, and fine dining restaurants this area definitely has a high class and the prices do reflect that. This neighborhood is located just a little bit further outside of the historic center making it very central, but it is also home to some famous sights such as the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese. Some of the most expensive hotels are found here, but there are also more affordable alternatives available.

Budget:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any budget accommodation in this part of town. If you want to stay on a budget you need to check other areas.

Midrange:

Appartamento Via del Corso – This apartment is located in a 1950 house and there is some very nice character to it. It’s also located close to many famous sights. There is a fully equipped kitchen for those who like to cook.

POPOLO PEN 56 Apartament – This is another fresh and modern apartment in this neighborhood, only 10 minutes walking to the Spanish Steps. It’s very quiet despite its location and the owner is super friendly and helpful.

Trastevere

Trastevere translates to “beyond the Tiber” which describes its location very well. This neighborhood is very charming with shuttered houses looking out over cobbled streets and buildings hung with vines, tiny bars and restaurants, quirky churches and museums, and small piazzas. The atmosphere is hip and it has a buzzing nightlife for those that are interested. Trastevere is, however, a bit from the city center but you can walk to the most famous sights in about 30 minutes. If you are not fond of walking there are different alternatives for public transport such as trams and buses. This area is mostly dominated by apartment rentals and Airbnbs which might be more affordable than staying in a hotel.

As always, I only recommend budget and midrange accommodation on my blog since I think it’s better to spend money on experiences and food instead. If you’re looking for luxury accommodation I cannot help you I’m afraid.

Budget:

Borgo Ripa by Hostel Trastevere – This hostel has a great location, right in the buzzling part of Trastevere, where most of the restaurants are located. The hostel has a beautiful garden to hang out in and also a bar if that is more your vibe. There are different sizes of dorms to choose from, which is always nice. They also serve breakfast for 7€. It’s a great hostel to stay at.

Hostel Trastevere – This hostel is a bit further from the center but still in a good location if you want to spend a lot of time at the Testaccio food market for example. It has a good public transport connection and the staff is really friendly. There is also a garden and terrace, and they serve a great breakfast for 5€.

Midrange:

Core De Roma Suites – This hotel is located with views of Piazza Trilussa, which is the main Piazza in Trastevere. Here, everything will feel close and you can easily walk to the other parts of Rome. A typical Italian breakfast is included in the price and the owners are very friendly.

Casa Di Santa Francesca Romana a Ponte Rotto – With a very authentic but yet modern touch this hotel is a great choice to stay a few nights. It is located close to the Trastevere center and on the premises is a beautiful garden, where you can enjoy a nice buffet breakfast in the morning.

Monti

How nice wouldn’t it be to wake up and see the Colosseum from your window? That is possible if you stay in this area, which is an upcoming hipster hotspot where most artists and younger generations choose to settle down. This neighborhood is a treasure as it is quite calm considering that it is home to Rome’s most historical area. Most of the famous sights are reachable by foot in about 30 minutes but this neighborhood also has a good connection with the metro, trams, and buses. Apartments and Airbnbs are most popular in this area but you can also find several hotels to choose from.

Budget:

Paolina Rooms & Parking – This is quite a famous spot to stay for young travelers but the prices don’t really show that. This accommodation has been featured in many guidebooks and you will for sure meet fellow curious travelers at this spot. The vibe is homey and cozy, so what more can you ask for?

Frank 35 – This hostel is small and simple, but everything works just as it should. It’s close to the Colosseum and public transportation connections. Frank is said to be very friendly and helpful so ask for some local tips when there!

Ostello Bello Roma Colosseo – There are so many budget accommodations in this part of town so I have to give you another tip. This hostel is really nice with a garden, a terrace and a bar. It’s a very social spot so you will for sure meet some new friends while there.

Midrange:

Colosseo Luxury Apartment – This apartment is so fresh and has everything you’ll ever need. It has a great location and even better is that there are bikes free for you to use!

Merulana 139 Suites – A super fancy B&B that has very spacious rooms and beautiful common areas. Only 7 minutes walking to the nearest metro station and only 20 minutes walking to the Colosseum.

Which is the best area to stay in Rome, Italy?

There are definitely more areas to stay in Rome, but these are my top recommendations if you are staying for a shorter period and want to explore the city. My favorite area is Monti, which is less crowded in comparison to the other areas and you can really feel a more local vibe there. There are also a lot of budget accommodations in this area so it won’t break your bank to stay here for a longer time. If you haven’t found any of my recommendations to be a good fit for you, you’re more than welcome to search for other accommodations below.
